I have been in Mumbai for two decades now, says Ginne.
Ginne shared her successful journey in a candid conversation with womendigest. It is an inspiring journey and I am sure it will help budding women entrepreneurs find the daring they need to take wing.
Tell us about your startup? And about the team.
Ginee Wadhawan , the founder of “Daughters are Blessings Foundation” floated an idea in 2013. I was in a US corporate education institute for 17 long years, left in June’2016 resigned as Marketing Head Asia Pacific with loads of experience. I left to be with my father who was suffering from a deadly disease. During my tenure I met so many people travelled across and learnt there is so much to teach and learn from the world. My father was very proud of me and always mentioned as “Daughters are Blessings”, everything started from there I made a page on Facebook, started writing my heart out during my travels. I have been in Mumbai for two decades now.
When was the eureka moment when you decided to have your startup?
We humans are a gift of god , and being a woman is a greatest gift, my love for little angels across, whom I met during my travels made me start, somewhere when u touch an emotional cord of people they respond to it very positively and affectionately and that’s what happened with the page it went to half a million people in just few years
Where is your startup located? What are your plans for expansion?
We are based in Mumbai. Discrimination against girls in society has been going on since ages now. Even today, there are several sections where the girl child is treated as a burden. Helping women carve a positive self-image and increase their confidence level. Enabling them to develop the ability to think critically. Ensuring that they have equal participation in decision making, whether it’s in the family or at the community level.Providing economic independence to women. The role of education is extremely important here and goes a long way in empowering women. And the process of education has to begin early in life. The mindset that a girl is a liability needs to be changed and this requires happening at the grass root level.
Who are your competitors and how you see yourself competition?
Competitors are in every corner, not just in our radius, now being in a social media era, competitors are all over, My page which I build to half a million on Facebook got hacked 15 days ago, I m fighting a tough battle with Facebook, cyber crime. Someone might not be happy with a page which has touched lakhs of people worldwide, but again this has not stopped me or my Foundation, have opened a new page started my work on social media again, Thankfully my work has been recognised outside Facebook also, I have been awarded and nominated lot of times for my social work.
What keep you excited about this startup?
The excitement grows each day , meeting people who share their stories and we together solve it , is a complete satisfaction. Being a motivational speaker I love talking my heart out too, I have best of both worlds the urban and the rural areas, I learn and teach both at the same time , together we empower.
Being a woman you have to handle a lot of things- tell us how you maintain work-life balance.
A girl of today is a women of tomorrow, thats the motto I live with so balance your today for a better future, believe me you can do it , We just have to be a good planner on things and we sail smoothly. You are much stronger than you think. i managed my work my then a toddler who’s a teenager now and my work which required me a lot of travel .
What is the most important learning which you want to share with our emerging women entrepreneurs?
All these are from my experience of these years and everyday I learn something new which i am open to.Entrepreneurship is about blazing new trails, about believing in yourself, your mission and inspiring others to join you in the journey. The ability to listen, whether it be to the opinions/suggestions. You must have the confidence to make your own choices. It is a struggle that an entrepreneur is willing to battle. It is using past experiences and intelligence to make smart decisions.
